FARIBAULT, MINN. – Looking to finish off a nearly perfect month, the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Boys U14 hockey team took on the Wisconsin Jr. Gamblers in their final games for October this past weekend.
In their first battle on Friday, the well-disciplined Gamblers (coached by ex-NHLer and Olympian Brian Rafalski) scored first and held the 1-0 tilt all the way through the first period. SSM quickly found their groove in the second period though, scoring five goals to give them a 5-2 lead heading into the final period. One more goal and outstanding work in net by goaltender Jeremy Carpenter secured a 6-2 win for the Sabres at the final buzzer.
SSM kept the momentum going in the second game against the Gamblers on Saturday. The Sabres scored three goals in the first and consistently scored two goals in the next two periods for a final 7-3 score.
The Sabres will return to play this weekend in a three-game home series against the Colorado Thunderbirds.
