Boys Bantams Move to 2-0 in Shootout Victory at Nationals

Buffalo, NY- It took seven rounds of shootouts for the Boys Bantam team to defeat the Anaheim Jr. Ducks on day two of USA Hockey Nationals. After a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation, the teams went to overtime but the game still couldn’t be decided after an extra period. Since no winner had been determined, the Sabres and Ducks went back and forth in a shootout until the 7th round when Oliver Wahlstrom ’19 went to his backhand and flipped one past the goaltender to give SSM the win.

After falling behind 1-0 midway through the first period, Shattuck-St. Mary’s responded just 47 seconds later when Grant Silianoff  ’19 found TJ Walsh ‘18 for a goal to tie the game at one. Just two minutes later, Oliver Wahlstrom scored his third goal of the tournament to give the Sabres a 2-1 lead. Shattuck-St. Mary’s would add one more in the second period on a Niklas Norman ‘19 goal, but two goals from the Ducks evened things once again. Both teams cracked down defensively in the third period and overtime. JP Mella ‘19 earned his first win of the tournament stopping 23 shots and standing tall during the shootout.
