Coach Gordie Stafford will assume leadership of the SSM Hockey Program 

Faribault, MN (July, 2016) – Gordie Stafford, the long-time Director of Girls' Hockey at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) in Faribault, Minnesota will be the new Director of Hockey, following Tom Ward’s announcement to join the NHL Buffalo Sabres as an assistant coach.
Coach Stafford began his tenure at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in 2000 as a Head Coach in the Boys’ program under J.P Parisé. In 2004, he became Head Coach of the Girls' Prep team and the Director of the Girls' Hockey Program (Girls' U19 and Girls' U16 teams), which has achieved 11 national championships under his leadership. The program has also developed four Olympians and numerous national team players for both the USA and Canada.
Throughout his entire tenure at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, Coach Stafford, along with his wife Debra, has also been a member of the English Department faculty. His educational background includes a masters' degree in Educational Psychology. He has remained interested in his own academic pursuits and is completing work on a Ph.D. in Performance Psychology.

Born in Canada, Coach Stafford played Junior hockey in the Western Hockey League, prior to signing with the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. He spent the majority of his professional, hockey career with the Milwaukee Admirals. He also coached the St. Albert Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Coach Stafford’s son, Drew Stafford, is a 2003 alumnus of Shattuck-St. Mary’s. After graduation, Drew played for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, and is a 10 year NHL veteran currently playing  for the Winnipeg Jets.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is an Episcopal, college preparatory boarding and day school enrolling students in grades 6 through 12 plus a post-graduate program. The school, located in Faribault, Minnesota, 50 miles south of the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, occupies a 250-acre campus on the bluffs of the Straight River.
