Sabre Volleyball in Full Swing

FARIBAULT, MINN. - Coach Langevin offered the following season update:
We have a tough schedule to start the year with SSM playing the top three TCAC teams from last year.

JV lost 2-0, scores of 14-25 and 13-25
Varsity lost 3-0, scores of 23-25, 22-25, 13-25
The Varsity played well against Christian Life on Tuesday at home, but it was their first match of the year. We were ready to finally play but just could not match the intensity the Christian Life brought to the match. In the first set, we were ahead 23-18 and it looked like we were going to get the win, but Christian Life played focused and well-rounded to end the game with seven straight points. We started out the second set more intense, but we just had a tough time overall making simple errors that led to a loss. By the time the third set started, we were running on fumes. A hot and humid gym, combined with our first match against a high-intensity team, meant that we were never really in the set. There were many positive things throughout the night that we could take with us into our next match.

JV lost 2-0, scores of 10-25 and 13-25
Varsity won 3-2, scores of 25-21, 15-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 15-8
WOW! If Tuesday night's match was intense, this match against Math & Science Academy, was even more so. We came out determined to not repeat the mistakes from the previous night. We improved in all aspects of the game and made the proper adjustments within the game as well. The first set was back and fourth all the way to a tie at 20-20. We were able to maintain a slight advantage in focus to finish off the first set with a win. Unfortunately, that focus left us as soon as the second set started. We gave them the first 7 points of the set, and even though we tried to fight back, we just could not overcome the way the set started and eventually lost by 10 points. The third set was a carbon copy of set one. Both teams went point for point, until they pulled away with the last three points of the set to win. In set four, we started to show what teamwork really is. We moved and communicated better than we had all night. We covered spots on the floor that looked like easy points, made some amazing digs on a couple hard spikes, and made a few great diving plays. Even with us playing really well, this was a tight set with the points going back and forth the entire time. We were able to go on a small run towards the end and never relinquished that lead for the win and to tie the match up at two sets apiece. Set five was all ours from the start. We never let them get anything started and we were determined to finish off this set and match on our own terms. We turned up the pressure both serving and on offense. Then we added in some great defense for a comfortable set and match victory.

Friday night's match is away at Nova Classical Academy (1st place last year).
